PROJECT DESCRIPTION
CONFERENCE CENTER OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC ACADEMY IN OLYMPIA
The location chosen to situate the conference center:
a) is directly accessible from the main road,
b) is located near the existing building (restaurant – library)
c) is adjacent to the existing parking lot, to which a pedestrian path is planned,
d) has southwest orientation,
e) overlooks the site of Ancient Olympia,
f) “complements” the existing composition, giving weight to the east.
The main aim of the proposal was a modern building, which will not come into confrontation with the existing buildings, while it would be one of the major, if not the most important building of the site. Problem was the volume of the conference room, which is located between a wall – limit and the natural ground. This limit is the back end of all other functions.
Set against the wall – limit which is recommended stone, appear as the main face other functions, organized as follows:
a) The two-storey foyer, communal and small rooms located under a long canopy, while the offices are independent settlement.
b) The gallery and the assembly of other small angle-placed volumes, have reference to seemingly disordered way of area connection in ancient Olympia.
c) The long gabled roof forms a “continuation” of the linear and narrow curved volume of hostels.
Finally, the composition includes outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces and terraces.
