PROJECT DESCRIPTION
SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE AT ALIMOS
ATTICA
This particular house is situated in a typical Athenian suburb, with whatever that means in terms of architectural production. Unfinished structures, new buildings with brut concrete on the balconies, blocks produced by contractors, dwellings that “cry” for attention, inexistent grass and undefined spaces that compose the environment of our daily life.
The specific project is an effort of resistance to the exaggeration and caprices of contemporary house construction.
It is designed for a family with two children, and developed on three floors with internal staircase. The plot’s dimensions restricted one side of the building to 5.50m only.
The design purpose is the reference to the geometric solid parallelepiped and the subtractive process of “erosion” without losing the unity of the building mass.
The basic composition is two same rectangular volumes that are separated by a third volume in retreat, a volume that creates a slot (the entrance slot and the staircase with a curved surface). A wall functions as background and hides the oblique angle of the plot.
Low cost materials were used: plaster, metal railings painted white, aluminum windows in blue color, solid tiles to all spaces. Surfaces that should be emphasized were painted with different color (panels, curved wall, round column).
