PROJECT DESCRIPTION

RESTORATION OF LANDMARK BUILDING AND FLOOR ADDITION
ERMOU 96, ATHENS

The architectural proposal refers on the restoration of a landmark building on Ermou Street 96, in the old commercial center of Athens. It is a two level building with mezzanine and basement, a tile roof on Ermou street, terrace at the back section and an added building in the courtyard.
The hazardous state of the building -due to poor current situation, necessitated the construction inside the building of a supportive concrete bearing structure to protect and extend the individual masonry. In combination with the proposal of restoration and reuse of the building, a second floor addition in retreat of the façade of the building, was decided. The outline of the building was maintained, the added building in courtyard was demolished, increasing the courtyard area and allowing the addition of a steel emergency staircase.
The interventions to the building’s interior were mild, following the existing architecture of the building. The internal floor heights and opening dimensions were maintained. Overall the proposal respected the morphology of the building, avoiding interventions that may alter aspects of a landmark building. Therefore, protection and reconstruction of the decorative elements were emphasized. Furthermore, openings, displays and floor entrance, were constructed of wooden frames and panels similar to the traditional old ones.
