PROJECT DESCRIPTION

HOUSE II LIVADIA CHANION
CHANIA, CRETE

The study concerns two independent buildings: a ground-level residence with a swimming pool and a semi-subterranean (underground) residence also with a swimming pool, to be constructed in the location “Koutoulos,” outside the boundaries of an approved city plan, in the Municipality of Kissamos, Chania.

The plot is situated on a rocky hillside with a sea view and presents a steep slope descending from the access road. The orientation of the plot is northeast in relation to the road and southwest in relation to the sea.

The main design principles for the placement of the two residences on the site are: integrating the buildings into the unique natural environment without altering it, taking into account orientation and sea views, as well as maintaining autonomy between the two buildings.

The two buildings are positioned such that one is parallel to the road with a southwest orientation and situated at a lower level than the road, while the other, to ensure autonomy and privacy, is rotated towards the southeast and “hidden” within the ground, following the site’s natural topography (semi-subterranean structure).

Residence 1 is developed in three connected rectangular volumes that create a protected “back” towards the north and a sheltered courtyard in the recess formed on the southern side of the central volume.
The taller central volume contains the living room, kitchen, and dining area, flanked by lower volumes containing the bedrooms to the west and east.
A water element (swimming pool) runs along the southwestern façade, completing the composition.

Residence 2 is a semi-subterranean rectangular structure. It is accessed from the road level via a linear staircase that leads to a rectangular atrium/courtyard, which defines the horizontal axis of the house.
The entrance is centrally located on the long side of the building. Extending from this, a second atrium/courtyard defines the vertical axis of the house.
To the right of the main entrance are the living room, dining area, and kitchen, while to the left are two bedrooms and bathrooms.
Large openings along the main façade and entrance atrium provide cross-ventilation and visual continuity, offering views both of the landscape and the swimming pool on one side and the boundary of the stone wall on the other.

The composition was carried out with full respect for the local architectural character, and materials compatible with the natural landscape were used.
The surrounding area of the residences is landscaped with slopes shaped to follow the natural terrain inclinations.
