PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Architectural competition for the construction of a social housing complex in Larnaca
03/2018
Location: Agios Nikolaos, Larnaca, Cyprus
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE SYNTHESIS
The cube, the rectangular prism, basic geometric solids, true forms, outside of places , simple elements with rough surfaces, the good proportion of solids and voids, the internal function, the more economical layout of the construction elements in coloration with the static model, the truth of the construction are the basic principles of the synthesis. The division of the synthesis into two buildings: 8 flats on the 1st plot and 28 flats on the 2nd plot, due to the peculiar shape of the plot and the building program. The maximum standardization of the flats on both plots based on a repeated module for minimizing the construction costs. The bioclimatic design and the energetic efficiency of the building. The proposal, with buildings on top of a PILOTIS on both plots, creating a long walk that starts on Koritsas street, crosses the 2nd plot and through Tenedous street marked crossing, continues onto the plant uncovered space of the 1st plot, ending up on the public park. The observance of the given budget, choosing suitable materials and innervations. Creating socializing, sports and recreation spaces on the PILOTIS and the roofs. The dialogue between the two buildings with corresponding synthetic approaches and the creation of two big walls of thermal storing, markings of the area. Breaking the continued volume, creating slits and recesses, regressing the staircases, and emphasising of the typology. Proposing public parks with dense tree planting, open air theatre, playground, long walking spaces, siting areas and stops as a continuation of the consolidated PILOTIS spaces and the uncovered areas of the buildings.
UNIT-GRID-RYTHM:
Synthesis is defined by choosing a clear structural system. The building form is constructed repeating the same structural pieces. The synthetic proposal displays architectural values such as the grid, the rhythm, the analogy, the sequence and the standardization. The synthesis based on a module (unit), of square shape, with dimensions 3.90X3.90m, multiple of 0.30m. A grid on the axes x,y was created on the base of the unit-core. A unit defines one bedroom, a combination of WC-bathroom-corridor or a covered terrace. Two units define a single space of kitchen-dining room-living room. A half unit defines a balcony. Five units define the 2-bedroom apartments, six units define the 3-bedroom apartments and seven units define the 4-bedroom apartments. We meet multiples or submultiples of the grid on the entire building, on the shelters, the frames, the furniture, the floor jointing, the siting spaces etc. This way we achieve economy of scale, repeating almost all the elements of the building. The structural system-static model follows a unit with 4 columns on the corners and solid walls on blind walls.
ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS – CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS:
Functionality and truth, honesty of the construction with simple geometrical forms and rough materials. The grid, the atriums, the succession of outdoor-semi outdoor-indoor space, the PILOTIS as a linear portico are synthetic elements that we can find on the Cypriot (ancient-traditional) architecture. The standardization, using a repeating unit implies the repetition on the materials used: frames – coatings – flooring – railings – stable furniture. The materials proposed, are contemporary and durable, with low construction and maintenance cost, compatible with a quality construction of the modern Cypriot society. Concrete on the carriers, slate brick structures on the shell, internal partitions from plasterboard, thermal façade on the external surfaces, thermal insulating aluminium frames, galvanized metal elements, internal and external flooring from tiles with earthy colours, tiles on the floor and walls of the bathrooms, marble on the stairwells. The coating of several volumes on the façade, at their main parts with synthetic wood (HPL) for differentiation and intensity of the rhythm. Cobblestones on the PILOTIS area of movement, packed soil on the socialization area and at the routes of the parks, special type floors for the cycling routes and the sports treadmills. The urban furniture are constructed using concrete for durability and placed at the PILOTIS, at the roofs and the public parks., at the roofs and the public parks., at the roofs and the public parks.
