PROJECT DESCRIPTION

RECONSTRUCTION OF THE SQUARE G.CHARITOU AREA 100 CHOURMADIES IN RHODES
SQUARE G.CHARITOU, RHODES

The proposal wants to create a friendly everyday space, mingled with cultural direction uses, in order to become attractive to citizens. In fact, it is trying to compose the following main themes: the creation of new cultural activities, the views towards the Sea and the Aquarium and the creation of a space friendly and familiar, an attractive and safe destination, preserving and highlighting the hallmark of the “hundred palms trees” aiming at “a different” city center. The area of the square was not treated as a ‘gap’ required an aesthetic beauty surgery, but like a “scene”, a place to meet and act, but also a place of rest and relaxation for the resident-visitor. Natural and architectural elements offer various activities, tranquility and looseness, but also enliven the senses.

The Haritos Square in order to become a magnet for city residents, passengers and tourists, we think that it must involve new uses and functions that will vary from recreation to culture and from relaxation to the exploitation of leisure time.

Primary objective is to change the square without altering the palm trees, on the contrary highlight them. Also, to become a lung of culture in cooperation with Nestorideion Foundation.

MAIN SYNTHETIC PRINCIPLES OF THE PROPOSAL

  • Consolidation of the square level until the sidewalks limit, with a uniform floor on one level with the appropriate inclinations, in order to acquire a cohesive character.
  • Realization of a central longitudinal axis of the square, which in its continuation is an axis to Kasos Street, the Aquarium and the sea. This is achieved by an installation that starts from the south side and ends shortly after the middle of the square and includes:
  1. Creating a usable landmark- observatory of the whole square towards the Aquarium and the sea to the north and the city to the south.
  2. The creation of a path to an elevated level, leading from one end of the square through the observatory, to an elevated catwalk leisure platform, event space, training, lectures and summer cinema screenings in the center, after crossing a bridge-catwalk with free view towards the sea from the vertical axis of roads Tilos and Pserimos.
  3. Future pedestrianization of Kasos street, would fully connect the square with the free space in front of the aquarium, as a continuation of the square, with the aquarium and the sea itself. This could create a supra-culture zone on the northern edge of the city.
  • Integration of the double linear growth of palm trees on the west side, to a green zone that includes playgrounds for children and adults, and ends in a low height “green” theater.
  • Creation of a “cultural” zone; boundary with the low disturbance street on the east side in connection with the function and the cultural life of Nestorideio Foundation.
  • Creating a water element from the cylinder- landmark to the roof.
  • Strengthening the through-route of the square, from Pserimos street by creating a low-entry gate to Tilos street and the sea
  • The regional road of the square, becomes a traffic road only for the necessary uses services, such as hotels and public buildings, etc. and certain hours of the day when store catering is required. The proposal considers the ring road as a space added to the square surface.
  • In order to solve the car parking, two different approaches-solutions are proposed:
  1. Construction of an underground car park.
  2. Outdoor car parking

Essentially, the proposal is trying to restore the axial connection of the square with the view to the sea and the aquarium, respects the existence and dynamics of the “hundred palm trees” and enhances their image, defining from the east side a clear move that traverses across the square without barrier, and incorporates the western side to a sequel of a green zone, low vegetation-limit for the low disturbance street. Solving the issue of basic movement south-north and the vegetation of the square, the central zone is released for cultural, leisure and recreation uses, in direct relation to the implementation of the central axis.
